Last.fm radio – 3€/month

I was pretty surprised to read the new blog entry on last.fm:

Last.fm Radio Announcement

Tuesday, 24 March 2009

Today we’re announcing an upcoming change to the way Last.fm Radio works in some parts of the world.

In the United States, United Kingdom and Germany, nothing will change.

In all other countries, listening to Last.fm Radio will soon require a subscription of €3.00 per month…..

END OF QUOTE

So, they want me to pay 3 Euro? Me, who lives on Christmas Island? Why is there a separation between the USA/UK/Germany and “other countries” ?  The blog post doesn’t tell.  I guess, it’s about time I moved to one of these countries, and I will do.  😛

Song of the Week 2009-13: Scala & Kolacny Brothers – You Oughta Know

CREEPY: Damien Rice – 9 Crimes (video)

This has got to be the creepiest video for a FOLK song I have ever seen. It scares the hell out of me but the same time it is fascinating. The video has been on my favourites list on youtube for months, but somehow I forgot to blog it…..

side note:  I wouldn’t even know Damien Rice existed if it wasn’t for Grace Buford and Each Passing Day, whom I am a big fan of and who have covered most of Damien’s songs.

Song of the Week 2009-11: Mazzy Star – Fade Into You

PLAY -> Mazzy Star – Fade Into You

Lyrics ??? – Lyrics !!!

The lyrics of a song can sometimes drive me to despair. Usually, it is like this: If I love a song’s melody and intrumentation, I take a closer look at the lyrics….otherwise, I wouldn’t even care about them.

Now, here are 2 songs I instantly fell in love with but I haven’t been able to find out their meaning, no matter how hard I tried. Infact, the harder I try, the more confused I become. Okay, there is nothing to say against imagery, pictorial language and English is not my mother tongue as you certainly have noticed but…but I am really desperate. You know, I love the songs and I don’t even know what they are about! (perhaps I wouldn’t like them anymore if I knew?)

I’m outing myself: I am more a scientist than an artist, so from my point of view, I prefer songs that get the message across clearly, like SOKO – “I’ll kill her”  This is quite a statement, isn’t it! 😛

Anyway, please check out the following lyrics and let me know if you have any ideas about their meaning. I’d be glad about any enlightment.

Andrew Bird – Cataracts

when our mouths are filled with uninvited tongues of others
and the strays are pining for their unrequited mothers
milk that sours is promptly spat
light will fill our eyes like cats

and they shall enter from the back
with spears and scepters and squirming sacks
scribes and tangles between their ears
faceless scrumbled charcoal smears

through the coppice and the chaparral
the thickets thick with mold
the bracken and the brier
catchweed into the fold

when our mouths are filled with uninvited tongues of others
and the strays are pining for their unrequited mothers
milk that sours is promptly spat
the light will fill our eyes like cats
cataracts

Iron & Wine – Flightless Bird, American Mouth

I was a quick wet boy
Diving too deep for coins
All of your street light eyes
Wide on my plastic toys
Then when the cops closed the fair
I cut my long baby hair
Stole me a dog-eared map
And called for you everywhere

Have I found you?
Flightless bird, jealous, weeping
Or lost you?
American mouth
Big pill looming

Now I’m a fat house cat
Nursing my sore blunt tongue
Watching the warm poison rats
Curl through the wide fence cracks
Pissing on magazine photos
Those fishing lures thrown in the cold and clean
Blood of Christ mountain stream

Have I found you?
Flightless bird, grounded bleeding
Or lost you?
American mouth
Big pill, stuck going down
